U.S. and Tech Giants Eye Greenland for Critical Minerals Amid China Dominance
Greenland has become a focal point for the U.S. government, tech giants, and mining companies as they seek to secure critical minerals essential for national security and advanced technologies. Former President Donald TRUMP emphasized Greenland's strategic importance, while House Speaker Mike Johnson highlighted its dual value for both security and mineral resources.
The U.S. Geological Survey identifies 60 critical minerals, including neodymium, dysprosium, germanium, and gallium—key components in tech hardware, semiconductors, and power devices. China currently dominates the global supply chain, refining 98% of gallium and 60% of germanium. This control grants Beijing significant leverage in the market.
In response, U.S. lawmakers are pushing for a $2.5 billion rare earth reserve to reduce dependence on China. The Pentagon has already begun mobilizing resources to address this vulnerability. The race to tap Greenland's untapped mineral wealth underscores the geopolitical stakes in securing supply chains for the digital economy.
